Provigil – viagra for the brain?
May 16th, 2008I can’t even think of a way to start this post. My brain is fried from a long week at work, and to be honest I’d be more comfortable switching off completely, flicking on the tv and sinking into brain dead bliss.
But what if there was a pill I could take, a kind of viagra for the brain, that would suddenly spring my brain into an academic hard-on? Let me at it I’d say!
Enter, Provigil. This wonder drug has been around since the 70′s, originally developed as an experimental treatment for narcolepsy, but has lately had a surge in popularity among perfectly healthy people needing a brain-boost.
Advocates promise increased concentration, memory, and IQ with no known side effects? Isn’t this too good to be true? Luckily we live in the age of the internet, where bloggers are the new lab rats. Thanks Johann Hari.
I sat down and took one 200mg tablet with a glass of water… I pottered about the flat for an hour, listening to music and tidying up, before sitting down on the settee. I picked up a book about quantum physics and super-string theory I have been meaning to read for ages, for a column I’m thinking of writing. Five hours later, I realised I had hit the last page. I looked up. It was getting dark outside. I was hungry. I hadn’t noticed anything, except the words I was reading, and they came in cool, clear passages; I didn’t stop or stumble once.
But wait there’s more!
My mood wasn’t any different; I wasn’t high. My heart wasn’t beating any faster. I was just able to glide into a state of concentration – deep, cool, effortless concentration. It was like I had opened a window in my brain and all the stuffy air had seeped out, to be replaced by a calm breeze.
Well I don’t know about you, but that just about sells it for me (hey, even Britney’s into it). Too bad you need a prescription (and probably narcolepsy) to buy the stuff. Nothing a quick google can’t fix!

Hate to disappoint you, but the article discussing modafinil was a little over-enthusiastic. It’s more suited for people who have to say alert and watchful for long periods of time, rather than people who need to make better decisions. It would help night watchmen or troops on combat missions more than it would help a student, scientists, or software developer. For deep analytical thinking, you’ll get no help from provigil because you’re trading speed for depth.
I kinda feel like punching Johann Hari in the face. Viagra for the brain? Did they really just say that? What a way to start a intelligent, considered, high-level discussion of the topic! I think Johann was probably not sleeping well and that’s why they got such a boost, but please note that getting a good night’s sleep comes with no side effects and requires no prescription.
If you’d like to read more about this stuff, I recommend Smart Drugs and Nutrients at Amazon.

I’m self-conscious because I grind my teeth as I go to sleep. When I have got close friends over I’m ashamed to utilize my teeth guard.
