From the moment you launch the site you can tell that Dinesh Nair and Jeff Sidlosky, the lad’s behind JukeFly, have have built something seriously impressive. The main attraction is their flash front end for YouTube with tracks organized by popularity and genre. You can create and share playlists, view lyrics and pictures of the artist and it has tight integration with email and twitter.

It kinda reminds me of Spotify, but cooler because I don’t have to reside in one of the select few countries that it will actually work in. JukeFly works everywhere, and it works well. Almost everyone I’ve linked it to the in the few days I’ve been playing around with it has absolutely loved it and has spread it further. I can really see this thing blowing up and hitting the ‘big time’.. which ironically could see the end of the service. A founder’s comment on Digg suggested they were seeking partnership with YouTube to stop the otherwise inevitable plug pulling and I wish them the best of luck.

Until that day however, stream on folks! This ones a gem.

So to save you a few bucks on buying a crappy game, and also hopefully give some developers a bit of exposure I thought I’d do a quick run down on games I actually play and recommend.

StoneLoops of Jurassica

This game is like crack, and if you have an xbox 360 you’ve probebly played something similar (Sorry forgot what its called on that, just remember playing it on a friends system..)

Peggle

Now this is a game that I think was origanlly released on the PC, which has made its way to the iPhone. It’s another puzzle game actually – the aim is to shoot a ball at orange pegs until you have hit them all. Sounds boring right, well check out the video below and you’ll get an idea of how addictive this can actually be.

That’s it…

Huh i hear you say? 2 games is all you play? Yep. I’ve downloaded 100′s and these are the only 2 that have stuck and I would actually recommend people pay for.. the vast, VAST majority of games on the iPhone are shit.

What if I told you there was a way to download all of the files you want without waiting and while maxing out your internet connection speed? There is. It’s called Easynews.

Easynews is whats called a “Newsgroup Provider”. If you want to find out more about what that is I suggest you use google, because I’m just going to cut straight to the chase here..

Using Easynews, and a feature called “Easynews Global Search” you can search for and download media right in your browser – thats right no clients. All of your download links are HTTP inks .

Step by Step Easynews Global Search Guide

Step 1. Sign up for Easynews – Plans start at $9.98 per month

Step 2. Launch the Web based ‘Easynews Global Search’ client and search for what you want to download.

Step 3. Review the Easynews Global Search results – You can even get a thumnail if it’s a movie, or a preview button if its a song.

Step 4. Click ‘Thumb’ in the search results to view a thumbnail preview

Step 5. Once you’ve found the file you want, just click the hyperlinked file name to start the HTTP Download

Thats it! There are some more advanced options such as restricting the size to narrow results, using the Zip Manager to collect many files together into 1 download (Good for downloads with many parts).

Controls are mostly as expected – pinch zoom, tap to click, etc. Keyboard input is manual (as in when you click a text editable field, the keyboard doesn’t automaticcaly pop up) which is a good thing considering the small screen.

I ran through a few quick mock senarios, restarting services, checking event logs etc and they were all quick. In fact the connection speed is downright impressive, over 3G or WiFi.

This is a fantastically cunning move by Facebook, and one that I think is going to really going to make things hard for Digg & Twitter. Once you give the 200 million odd facebook users the ability to contribute to the ‘public stream’ in a way that allows privacy when they require you open a whole new world of possibilties.

It doesn’t take a genius (hence my post) to figure out where they’re going with this:

Digg Killer – Add a ‘Dislike’ button to go with ‘Like’, rank popular popular posts and you have Digg.com for the mainstream. Digg would really need to come up with something special to fend off this fight, as their concept is pretty simple at its heart.

Twitter Killer – Allow users to ‘follow’ users public feed without being a friend, and make the stream searchable for extra points.

People often scoff at the $10 Billion valuable given to Facebook, but given the sheer power the network has to destory other startups I don’t think its far off the mark. So long as they contiune to deliver strong products, comparable to any compitition they’re always going to win.

So good luck Digg, Twitter – you’re going to need it.

If you’re anything like me the first thing you want to do with your freshly updated iPhone is to jailbreak it, and unleash the full power of the device.

So here it is, step by step exactly how to jailbreak your iphone as I know it can be quite overwhelming for new users.

1. Sync your iPhone with iTunes, update to 3.0 and do a full backup
2. Download redsn0w-win_0.7.1.zip from the iphone-dev blog here
3. Unzip, and run redsn0w.exe
4. redsn0w will ask for the .ipsw (firmware) file for your iPhone. It should be in the following folder – C:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\Device Support – or similar. If you’re having trouble fnding the .ipsw file, use windows search to find it or you can download it manually from here.
5. After loading the firmware into redns0w, you’ll received a message “IPSW Successfully Identified”, click next.
6. Make sure “Install Cydia” is ticked (it is by default), click next.
   
7. Turn your iPhone off and plug it into your computer, click next
8. Follow the onscreen instructions to put your iPhone into DFU mode and begin the jailbreak proccess. This will take about 10 minutes during which time your iPhone screen will flash bright white, and display the jailbreak logos.
9. Once the proccess is complete you will get a message saying “Done”. Click finish to reboot your iPhone for the last time.
10. Thats it! You’ve successfully jailbroken your iPhone 3.0 using redsn0w. You should see a Cydia icon on your springboard.

So whats the point of all this? Why do we want to jailbreak our phone anyway?

Well now we can run unsigned software, without going through the appstore. There are tons of useful apps avaliable only through Cydia.

If you’re morally loose you may even be intersted in running ‘cracked’ or ‘pirated’ apps on your iPhone. I might cover this in another post soon!

Anyway the first Dexter book is called Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. We had to goto about 3 differnt stores to find it because it was sold out – the show has just started airing on regular tv here so I’m guessing alot of ppl are getting into it.

So far is very good she says, I can’t wait till I get my turn to read it. We’ve already ordered the rest in the series from Amazon.

1. FFDShow

Forget codec packs, this is all you’ll ever need. FFDShow has played every audio and video file I’ve ever thrown at it, and the best part is – its free (GPL!). Install it once and never worry about codecs again. Pro tip: setup the normalisation filter and all your audio will play at the same volume.

2. ESET NOD32 Antivirus

Everyone has their favorite and this is mine. I’ve played with basicly every AV product out there and this wins for me hands down. It’s solid, has a small footprint, doesn’t annoy the shit out of you with popup and the results speak for themselves.

3. FlashGet

The FlasGet site says it all – “Best Download Manager”. Great for pulling insane download speeds with Easynews. I like the simple interface, and the fact that is just works. Has all the features I need (scheulding, secure site support, multi-threading).

4. Filezilla

Filezilla is a great little free FTP client, opensource too! A great example of how great software doesn’t need to cost a thing. For anyone who runs a website, this is a must-have.

5. 7-Zip

Say bye-bye to that expired WinRAR trial.. say hello to 7-Zip! From the website:  “7-Zip is a file archiver with a high compression ratio.” It’ll unpack all popular formats (RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, MSI, WIM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS) and has the same right-click functioanily as WinRAR (except its free!).

6. Foxit Reader

Don’t waste your time with Adobe Reader’s bloat – Foxit Reader is smaller (2.55M), faster (loads in 1-2sec) and free! No need to worry about compatibility either, Foxit will handle any PDF on the web.

7. FireFox

Faster, more secure and more customisable, Firefox is the web-browser that needs no introduction (but I gave it one anyway). FF is catching groud fast on IE in terms of market share which is a pretty mean feat considering IE ships with Windows and most people are lazy!

8. µTorrent

I’m not into torrents so much these days but µTorrent is easily the best BitTorrent client out there (most popular too!). You have the choice of a full installer, or stand alone exe. You’re most likely already using this so I won’t bore you too much with the details, but one of the best features for me is the Web Interface which lets you manage your torrents remotely.

9. OpenOffice

Because we all get .doc / .xls files sent to us that we need to open! Why steal MS Office when this great free alternative is avaliable? Check it out today, recoommend to friends!

10. iTunes

I’ve always hated iTunes but lately it’s been growing on me. Especially now with my iPhone I use it everyday and I’ll admit I’m starting to like it. I even use the store to preview songs before I download them (from Easynews).
